Work Experience / Internship Descriptions and Evaluations

As a Rhodes Journalism student I spent at least one work experience / internship a year with various types of media houses which included traditional print, an online publication, and television. Here I list those work experiences with a brief discussion of my duties, while highlighting what I learned. Also attached are evaluation forms from each internship.

Illustrative and informative introduction to the media world, particularly to the traditional workings of a large-scale newspaper. Gained insight into the methods of communication, teamwork and responsibilities of the organisation.

1) The Weekend Post - 2009 - Intern

2) The Daily Maverick - 2010 - Intern

Illustrative and informative introduction to new media via a small-scale online publication. Gained insight into the methods of communication, teamwork and responsibilities of the organisation.

3) Ignition TV - 2011 - Intern

Provided me with experience in Television journalism, in particular television production. It taught me the value of the team concept inherent in a TV media house, from filming, editing, sound mixing, and producing through to broadcasting. I gained valuable practical skills while working in the editing suites and in the field.

The experience introduced me to the importance of professional content and discipline as required by TV journalism and television productions, in particular. I got involved in the team workings of a TV media house, from the filming to the editing, the sound mixing, the producing and the broadcasting of each show. Work in the editing suites and on shoots demanded that I stuck to deadlines, showcased professional content and committed to my responsibilities.

4) eNCA - 2012 - Intern

Worked in the studios, edit suites and general newsrooms of a 24hour Television News network.

I was introduced to the reality and immediacy of News journalism via experience in the field, while shadowing journalists and assisting them and/or their respective cameramen and producers on various assignments.

5) CueTV - 2012 - Producer

This was a high-pressure assignment which necessitated a lot of teamwork, and dedication to each project. Alternately edited, produced and shot (or all three) 12 films in 10 days, covering a variety of plays, shows, exhibits and interviews with theatre directors, actors, artists and musicians. Working with different individuals on different films also tested my interpersonal and communicative skills.
