“It’s kind of a hit or miss process, you don’t have that much control” Says an articulate and softly spoken voice, from an isolated room within the hallways of the Rhodes University’s Sculpture Department, Grahamstown.

Internationally acclaimed artist, Diane Victor, circulates a candle flame across a sheet of paper - the beginnings of an image drawn from an untamed imagination. “All my life the way a child draws stuff out their head it’s the way I’ve always done, just drawn things out of my head”, says Victor.

After finishing her second portrait for the day, Victor stretches her legs before continuing with her work. By the day's end, she is hoping to finish five different portraits.
